The grapes have entered veraison (the onset of ripening) and harvest is just around the corner. This has been an interesting year for Kansas wine, and for many other growing regions as well. From a dry spring, to a super wet first half of June, to a dry and hot July, and now a cool and rainy August. Most every vineyard is very pleased to have received the rain we did in the past week.
Harvest is a magical time, and one of the best days to spend in a vineyard. For the winegrowers, it is the day to fully realize the fruits of their labor. Many wineries offer the opportunity to volunteer and help pick the grapes during harvest. We would encourage you to review the map and inquire at a winery near you about harvest opportunities. Get out and be an agritourist for a day. You won’t regret it! Cheers.
